Alvaro Larrama, the East Boston man accused of killing a 23-year-old Marine veteran while working as a bouncer near Faneuil Hall in 2022, pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge Thursday morning, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

He was sentenced to serve between 17 and 20 years at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center, according to court documents. Larrama was initially facing a murder charge.

Larrama was a bouncer at Sons of Boston, a bar on Union Street, on March 19, 2022. Daniel Martinez, the veteran, was visiting Boston from Illinois to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day that weekend.

Martinez was with a group of friends, and he and Larrama got into an argument when a person who was with Martinez was not allowed entry, prosecutors said.

Larrama followed Martinez to an area outside another bar. An altercation ensued, during which Martinez hit Larrama with a beer bottle, police said. Larrama then stabbed Martinez twice in the chest.

He went back to Sons of Boston where Alisha Dumeer, a co-owner, helped him avoid authorities. Dumeer pleaded guilty to an accessory charge last November.

Larrama turned himself in to police two days later.

Sons of Boston lost its liquor license in the wake of the incident. It has since closed and reopened at the same location under a new name, Loyal Nine.

“It’s so important to our family that we get the message out not just a Marine was killed — a human being was killed,” Apolonia Martinez, the victim’s mother, said Thursday while holding framed photos of her son, per NBC10 Boston

“I do forgive him, but I still stand firm that he should spend 20 years in prison,” she said of Larrama.
