Manchester City have now made surprise player their contract priority this year

Must Read

Manchester City have reportedly made Julian Alvarez their priority in their upcoming round of contract talks with the senior team.

According to the Mirror, the Argentine international is first in line to be awarded a new deal as City look to tie down their most frequent players this season to improved contracts, with Alvarez impressing in his first year in England.

The 23-year-old attacker signed for the Manchester giants last year and officially joined up with City in the summer, where Alvarez has been a prolific forward for Pep Guardiola’s side as well as a great backup for Erling Haaland.

Whilst the Norwegian international has stole the headlines this season for his record-breaking antics, Alvarez has been allowed to thrive away from the spotlight, with many City fans tipping the attacker to become the club’s long-term centre-forward.

Indeed, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake also in contention for a new contract, City prioritising Alvarez speaks volume about how much the Manchester side wants to keep the South American attacker around for the long haul.

The youngster was key to Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph last year in Qatar, and City are making a smart decision in trying to tie Alvarez down to a new contract so soon after officially becoming a player for the Manchester giants.

There’s a smell of uncertainty in the air around City following the Premier League’s bombshell statement about the club at the start of the month, yet with the Manchester side going about their business as usual, it makes sense why future-proofing the squad is now on Guardiola’s mind.

With nobody sure what will happen to City in the coming months following their Premier League breaches, signing the likes of Alvarez to a new contract is a smart move from the Etihad Stadium side in protecting their most valuable assets, with the Argentine a player who could stick around in Manchester for quite some time.
