Where is the coolest neighborhood in Massachusetts? According to a new list, it’s in Somerville.

Travel magazine Time Out just released a list of the coolest neighborhoods in the world, and one Massachusetts city made the cut.

Somerville’s Union Square area was named No. 38 on the list of coolest neighborhoods in the world.

Union Square really feels like Boston’s coolest cousin,” the magazine said.

The Massachusetts city was among a few other United States destinations on the list, like neighborhoods in Los Angeles, California, and Chicago, Illinois.

Here’s why Union Square made the list.

Why Somerville’s Union Square is one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world

Somerville’s Union Square neighborhood is one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world, according to Time Out.

The magazine said the neighborhood’s proximity to Cambridge makes it a good place for students and young families to live, and the newly opened Green Line stop gives easy access to Boston.

Time Out also gave its local recommendations, suggesting eateries like Union Square Donuts, Bow Market and Field & Vine.

“Local spots like Portuguese breakfast staple Neighborhood Restaurant & Bakery reflect Union Square’s diverse demographics, while restaurants like Celeste and nearby Sarma stand out among the most exciting restaurants in the Boston area,” the outlet said.

How the coolest neighborhoods were ranked

Time Out said its global team of editors ranked the world’s coolest neighborhoods by looking at factors like culture, community spirit and nightlife.

“We narrowed down the selection and ranked the list using the insight and expertise of Time Out’s global editors, who vetted each neighbourhood against criteria including food, drink, arts, culture, street life, community and one-of-a-kind local flavour,” the publication said.
