“My personal life is my personal life. I’m going to work to make sure that privacy is maintained for my family.”

Aides to Governor Maura Healey initially refused to disclose where she traveled for a four-day trip last month.

After initially refusing to divulge to the public where she traveled on a four-day trip in February, Gov. Maura Healey’s aides informed the public that she was in Puerto Rico on a personal trip.

“The Governor’s focus is on balancing the need to protect the privacy and security of her family while also providing information to the public. Last month, the Governor’s partner, Joanna Lydgate, took her to Puerto Rico for a long weekend for her birthday — their first vacation together in a long time,” said Karissa Hand, a Healey spokesperson, in a statement Friday, according to The Boston Globe.

The initial response of denying the public this information, a departure from her practices earlier in her term and past elected officials in her position, has raised questions about how much information she should be expected to hand over to the public.

Last fall, governor’s office announced it would no longer provide advance notice of her travel due to safety concerns, according to NBC 10 News.

While the governor’s office has never elaborated on any security concerns, the change in policy happened after local neo-Nazis demonstrated outside her home in Arlington, the news station reported.

Healey defended this decision on Monday, saying, “My personal life is my personal life. I’m going to work to make sure that privacy is maintained for my family.”

Secretary of State William F. Galvin initially disclosed that Healey was out of state instead of her office, according to the Globe. He informed the public that he would be serving as acting governor in the wake of her and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll’s absences, in accordance with state law.

Moving forward the governor’s personal out-of-state travel plans will be available in her monthly calendar upon request, Hand told the paper.

A copy of her calendar, which The Boston Globe requested, was made available last week and said she had left the state between Feb. 8 and Feb. 11. However, it did not disclose the exact time of her departure or return.
